WELCOME TO THE U.S.C.G. CHIEF PETTY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION GRAND HAVEN CHAPTER
Tom Rau, the 27-year Coast Guard veteran whose boating safety columns, books and radio broadcasts taught hundreds of thousands of boaters how to “Boat Smart,” succumbed to cancer at Manistee Medical Care Facility after a lengthy illness. He was 68.
The following Scholarship was established in Toms honor and is available through the Grand Haven Chapter Chief Petty Officers Association.

QMCS Tom Rau Memorial College Scholarship
Eligibility: USCG E-6 and below, Regular and SELRES, along with their dependents serving at Coast Guard units from Station, Michigan City, Indiana, north along Lake Michigan to Station Frankfort, Michigan and dependents of GHCPOA members in good standing. Applicant must be enrolled in an accredited institution for the current school year.
Enter by submitting an essay on the topic(s) and following the rules/guidelines for the Captain Caliendo and/or the Walter Gore Scholarships mentioned below.
2024 ESSAY TOPIC
"Is the federal government awarding student loans in a fiscally effective way or should the Department of Education incentivize loans in support of critical occupations and/or applicants' academic potential?"
Submission: Your essay(s) must be emailed to the Grand Haven CPOA at Grandhavenmicpoa@gmail.com no later than 1700 hrs (5:00 PM) Est on 1 April 2024. All submissions will become the property of the GHCPOA and the winners(s) agree to have the essay(s) posted on the chapter's website.
Selection: Two $500 grants will be awarded, one for each essay topic. It is possible for one individual to win both grants. A committee of chapter members will review the submitted essays and select the winner(s). The winning individual(s) along with their family will be invited to attend an event during Coast Guard week in August. The winner(s) will be presented a $500 check at that time.

The Captain Caliendo College Assistance Fund Scholarship
To assist the DEPENDENT CHILDREN of CPOA/CGEA members in defraying expenses incurred at a university, college or vocational school of acceptance.

Walter Gore Memorial Scholarship
To assist MEMBERS of the CPOA/CGEA in defraying expenses incurred at a university, college or vocational school of acceptance.
2024 ESSAY TOPIC

500 Words or less. Entry deadline: 1 April 2024.
Two grants up to $500.00 each will be awarded to the individuals submitting the top two entries.
